Elbert Grant "Jimmy" Walker

June 7, 1927 ~ June 14, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Elbert Grant "Jimmy" Walker, of Shanksville, died June 14, 2017 at the age of 90, yes 90. After losing the love of his life for 65 years, Dorothy Mae Baker Walker in 2014, he didn't think he would see 90. Born June 7, 1927 in Stonycreek Township he was the third of five boys born to the late Richard and Maggie Walker. He was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth, Glenn, Jay and his wife LaRue, and Dayton and his wife Mabel. He also lost his brother-in-laws Frank "Bud" Baker and Ed Baker. After graduating in 1945 from Shanksville-Stonycreek High School, Jimmy was stationed in Panama during WWII. After leaving the service, Jimmy and Dorothy worked a dairy farm and had two boys, Barry Lynn Walker married to Korri Sue Snyder Walker, and Terry Lee Walker married to Irene Defibaugh Walker. Those boys blessed Jimmy and Dorothy with five grandchildren that practically grew up at their house, Brian and fiancé Angi Mowry, Derrick, Tanya and husband Christopher Lodge, Joni and husband Robert Hufford, and Matthew and wife Myranda. Jimmy also had eight great grandchildren: Courtney Walker, Dakota and Cheyenne Long, Christian and Tyler Lodge, Florence and Grace Hufford, and Macallan Walker as well as one great-great-grandson, Haku. Jimmy was also very loved by his special nieces and nephews: Greg and Barb Walker, Shari Walker, Doug and Tracie Walker, Glenn, Glenda and Stephanie Zolla, and sister-in-law Nancy Walker. Next to his love for his wife, Jimmy loved to sing. He was a member of the Roof Garden Chorus, often competing in competitions, as well as a member of the "Heart and Soul" quartet singing anywhere he could. As a lifelong member of Unity United Church of Christ, he was devoted to his church and his church family singing favorites such as "Surely the Presence", "The Old Rugged Cross" and fan favorite "In the Garden." He was a member of Berlin V.F.W., and enjoyed driving school bus. Jimmy was not only known for his singing, but also his love of hugs and kisses, especially with the nurses in his final days. He never found a person or crowd he didn't like or that didn't like him. He was truly a gift from God and our family was beyond blessed to have him. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff on the 10th floor of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for all their hard work and kindness in Jimmy's last days. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Monday at Unity United Church of Christ. Rev. Jay Shaffer officiating. Interment Glade Cemetery. Graveside military rites by Berlin Veterans Home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to Unity U.C.C., P.O.
