Evelyn Lohr Bittner

Evelyn Lohr Bittner, 95, Stoystown, died July 26, 2017 at New Haven Court Personal Care Home, Greensburg. Born March 30, 1922 in Hooversville, daughter of Orange O. and Ethel (Powell) Lohr. Preceded in death by parents, husband Robert W., and brother W. Dwight Lohr. Survived by two sons: Dr. Gregory L. Bittner married to the former Cheryl Wergin, Greensburg, and Dr. Randall L. Bittner, married to the former Stacey Maurer, Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren: David, Carling, Rob, and Brock Bittner; and one great grandson. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown, where she “wore many hats” including: church organist for 34 years, coordinated the Grace Lutheran Community Music Festival for many years, member of church council, Sunday school teacher, Altar Guild, Women of the ELCA, and acolyte and greeter chairperson. Also a member of the County, State, and National Education Associations, The Pennsylvania Business Education Association, Eastern Star, and Stoyestown Area Historical Society.  Charter member of the Somerset County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society for women educators. Volunteer at Somerset Community Hospital, Somerset County Historical Society, Meals on Wheels, and other charities. She was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a retired business education teacher with 30 years of service in the North Star School District. She was a sponsor for National Honor Society, Tri-Hi-Y Club, and yearbook and business club advisor. One of her favorite activities was taking her business education students to Washington D.C. for an annual spring trip. She was the recipient of the North Star Teacher of the Year Award in 1975. Evelyn’s travels included Europe, China, Africa, Mexico, and Canada. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown.
