James Merle "Pop" Knox

October 19, 1913 ~ March 17, 2018 (age 104)

James Merle “Pop” Knox, 104 years and 5 months, Meyersdale, died March 17, 2018 at home. Born Oct. 19, 1913 in Confluence, son of Mahlon and Minnie (Frazee) Knox. Preceded in death by parents; wife, the former Edith Barndt; sisters: Thelma Trimpey, Laura Mintmier, Valley Knox, and Mary Colflesh; brothers: Floyd, Herbert, and John Knox; and son-in-law Earl Watkins. Survived by daughters: Nellie Watkins, Berlin, and Esther Hauger and husband Hilton, Garrett; granddaughter Joyce Gardner and husband Gary; and great granddaughter Hayley, Berlin; and his beloved canine companion, Honey, who never left his side. He had worked in the steel industry, various coal mines, did farm work, and retired from Fleetwood Folding Trailers. Member of the Somerset Church of the Nazarene where he enjoyed being a greeter. He enjoyed cooking, woodworking, and he volunteered at the Golden Living Center in Meyersdale until the age of 102. He never knew a stranger and had a smile for everyone. The family would like to thank the staff of Asera Care Hospice for the outstanding care he received and would like to give a special thank you to Tammy Purbaugh and Nancy Miller for their care, compassion, and love during his final days. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin where service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Pastor Dale Stotler officiating.
