Mary Ellen Glessner

Mary Ellen Glessner, 98, Somerset, formerly of Friedens, died peacefully surrounded by her children on May 24, 2017 at Somerset In Touch Hospice House. Born Oct. 16, 1918 in Friedens, daughter of Edward and Phoebe (Shaulis) Smucker. Preceded in death by parents, husband Owen of 64 years, and brothers Edward F. “Bud” and Robert G. Smucker. Survived by children: Karl D. married to the former Donna Landis, Shanksville, Joanna married to George Russell, Saylorsburg, Ellen K. married to Thomas Burrows, Pipersville, Kathleen Randall and companion Kevin Pearce, Gray, and Timothy married to the former LuAnne Short, Mechanicsburg; grandchildren: Carrie (Will) Young, Jacob (Stephanie) Glessner, Sarah (John) Gerken, George Owen Russell, Tiera Burrows, Stephanie (Seth Rodgers) Randall, and Daniel and Gregory Glessner; and great grandchildren: Jack and Leah Gerken, and Neoma Young. She was a 1935 graduate of Somerset Twp. High School at the age of 16. Lifetime member of Friedens Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir for many years. Member of Somerset Co. Farmers Assoc. and volunteered for Meals On Wheels. She was active for many years in 4-H and enjoyed getting together with her friends at 4-H Senior Extension. She designed two homes where she and her family lived during their lives. She enjoyed writing, games, puzzles, and loved spending time with family and friends. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Fri. and 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Sat. at Friedens Lutheran Church. Rev. Edward V. DeVore officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park.
