Walter Glenn Oakes Sr., 72, Berlin, after years of labored breathing took his first heavenly breath April 16, 2016. Born Dec. 8, 1943 in Champion, son of John and Blanche (Henry) Oakes. Preceded in death by parents, sisters Margaret and Helen Ruth, 4 sisters-in-law, and 2 brothers-in-law. Survived by his wife of 49 years the former Bonnie Pugh; children: Elizabeth (Doug) Zepka, Burlington, Conn.; Glenda Dianne (James) Benedict, Julie Lewis, and Crystal Gayle (Edward) Lyzbicki, all of Somerset; Jennifer Gillespie, Cincinnati, Oh.; Walter Jr. (Karen), Garrett; Charlene “Charlie” (Paul) Fike, Stevens; friend Mark Kalp who was thought of as a second son; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Raymond, Thomas, and Carol (Marc) Kemp, all of Fairhope; John (Pearl), Stoystown; Mildred (Randy) Lenio and Larry (Gail), all of Somerset; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He served in the U.S. Army, worked construction, and was a member of UMWA. He was a member of Somerset Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, and former member of Berlin Fire Dept. A special thanks to caregivers Amy, Debbie, Nancy, the entire staff of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, and his home health nurse of many years Tracey May. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, attending church, collecting coins and antiques, and going to auctions. He always made sure we had everything we needed. If someone asked for the shirt off of his back he would hand it right over. He had the biggest heart. Our hearts are sad for our loss, but we rejoice in knowing he is with our Lord. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tues. at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. Viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Wed. at Somerset Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic. Pastor Justin A. Miles officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park.
