William John Flick

October 7, 1928 ~ January 13, 2018 (age 89) 89 Years Old

William John Flick, 89, of Berlin, formerly of Stoystown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Jan. 13, 2018 at Meadow View Nursing Center. Born Oct. 7, 1928 in Hollsopple, son of William Russell and Bertha E. (Brown) Flick. Preceded in death by parents, wife of 64 years Lois (Oaks) Flick who passed away on Jan. 21, 2015, daughter Kathryn Ann in 2000, brother Ray Dean, and sister Shirley McDonald. Survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Betty Flick. He was a 1947 graduate of Stoystown High School where he played baseball, football, and basketball. Korean War Army Veteran where he was assigned to the Army Security Agency as a teletype operator in Virginia, decoding messages and delivering them to the Pentagon. John retired from Latrobe Steel where he was employed for 35 years and was also affiliated with Deaner Funeral Homes. John was a former Deputy Wildlife Conservation Officer for 28 years and received one of the first Outstanding Deputy WCO Awards in the Southwest division. He was one of the first hunter/trapper safety class instructors in Somerset County and was the first to teach a woman’s class in 1998. Also in 1998 John was the first person from Somerset County to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsman’s Club Hall of Fame. Member of Grace Lutheran Church, Stoystown, Quemahoning Rod and Gun Club, Jenner Rod and Gun Club, Paradise Valley Sportsmen’s Club,  Somerset County Old-timer’s Baseball Hall of Fame, and a life member of the Stoystown American Legion Post 257. John enjoyed early morning breakfast at Coalfields Mini Market in Berlin. John was an active sportsman that loved to fish and hunt. In recent years John enjoyed driving the countryside with his niece Connie Weyant looking for wildlife, and eating breakfast at the Summit Diner. John also loved to travel, play cards, and do a little gambling. He led a happy and productive life. His family will greatly miss him. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Pastor Sharon Fox officiating. Inurnment Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stoystown.
