Carl E. “Fred” Bittner, 70, Berlin, died Jan. 14, 2020 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 10, 1949 in Meyersdale, son of Phillip and Mary Edna (Weimer) Bittner. Preceded in death by parents, and brothers Henry and Paul. Survived by wife of 47 years the former Nancy Smith; daughter Laurissa (Mel Ortiz) Bittner, Myrtle Beach, SC; son Bradley (Susan) Bittner, Westminister, MD; grandchildren: Abigail and Charles Bittner; brothers: James Bittner, Barberton, OH, and Larry (Nola) Bittner, Pequea; sisters-in-law: Suzan Bittner, OH, and Betty Bittner, Somerset; brothers-in-law: J. William (Linda) Smith, Davidsville, and Thomas Smith and friend Eileen Siwicki, Pittsburgh; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a 1967 graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School and was a Vietnam War Air Force Veteran. He was a marketing director for PBS Coals and owner of Peak Coal Sales. Member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Berlin, where he was a former Deacon, Meyersdale Lodge #1951 B.P.O.E., and a past member of BBSD Board of Education. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gambling, lawn sculpting, his cabin at Lake Stonycreek, and his Eat’n Park daily breakfast club with “Flickie”, “A.J.”, and Deb. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. Viewing from 9:30 a.m. until service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Church of Christ, Berlin.
