Charles "Roy" Benson

Charles “Roy” Benson, 97, Friedens, entered into eternal life Feb. 24, 2019 at The Patriot. Born July 6, 1921 in Friedens, son of Earl Michael and Helen (Lear) Benson. Preceded in death by parents, wife, the former Neva Zerfoss, and an infant sister Dorothy. Survived by daughter Lori married to Dennis Zolla, Friedens; grandchildren: Sheena, married to Ian Mandichak, Somerset, and Derek Zolla, at home. He attended Somerset Twp. High School and was a World War II Army Veteran where he served with the Military Police in China, Burma, & India. Roy was a mechanic for Cooper Jarrett and retired from Laurel Hill State Park. Member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Somerset, lifetime member of Friedens Vol. Fire Co., an original Scoutmaster for Friedens Boy Scout Troop 152, former treasurer for Somerset Co. Firemens Assoc., board member for Somerset Co. Ambulance, member of Somerset Lodge No. 358 F. and A.M., Jaffa Shrine, Harrisburg Consistory, Somerset V.F.W. and Legion. He enjoyed working with stained glass, wood working, playing poker with Jay Ankeny and Tom Wickham, and watching WWE wrestling and working on the Model A with his grandson, Derek. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown where a Masonic Service will be held at 8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown.
