Brigadier General Larry Powell (Major General Retired) Obituary

Brigadier General Larry Gene Powell (Major General Retired), of Stoystown, died March 7, 2021 at his home. Born in New Castle, son of the late Clarence Curtis and Thelma Kathleen (Salmon) Powell. Survived by his wife of 57 years the former Marlene Whitsel, 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He graduated from Union Township High School and Penn State University with a B.S. in Forestry. He joined the U.S. Army in 1965 and spent 35 years with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, serving at many Army posts in the U.S. and Germany. He established Appalachian Forest Consultants and operated the business for fifty-plus years till the time of his death. General Powell was a man of faith and integrity, he loved giving to and helping other people. He especially enjoyed ministering in the Somerset County Jail. He sponsored many internal students at Summit School of the Bible in Annville, PA. At the time of his death he had fought cancer for 10 years and 5 days. Many thanks to Dr. Ibrahim Sbeitan from Conemaugh Hospital, he was always there for us. Larry lived by these words “Life is easy when you are on the mountain and you have peace of mind like you have never known, how things change when you’re down in the valley, don’t lose faith, for you’re never alone.” General Powells funeral and service will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA on Saturday, May 29 at 9:30 a.m. A reception will follow at Summit Bible School, and all is open for the public to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Somerset Christian School, 708 Stoystown Rd., Somerset, PA 15501. Arrangements entrusted to Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown.
