D. Larry Barnhart, 89, of Somerset, formerly of Stoystown, died April 27, 2025 at UPMC Magee. Born Aug. 7, 1935 in Stoystown, son of David Milton and Ruth Fern (Fulton) Barnhart. Preceded in death by parents, brother David Lynn Barnhart, and sisters: Joan Zimmerman and Norma Pile. Survived by his wife of 66 years the former Marlene Rexroth, whom he married Jan.11, 1959; children: Natalie Barnhart (Charlie Barron), Matthew James (Machelle) Barnhart, and Carolyn (Frank) Norris; grandchildren: Sydney (Adam) Pritts, Carly Barnhart (James Barndt), Grant Norris, and Nathan Barnhart; great grandchildren: Ella, Maverick, Evie, and Etta Pritts, and Weston and Rex Barndt; cousin Gloria Shaulis (Bob) Kripowicz; and nieces and nephews: Ryan and Joel Zimmerman, Lisa, Andrea, Ingrid, and Rusty Pile, Susan Buchanan and Jonathan Barnhart. He was a 1953 graduate of Forbes High School, 1957 graduate of Lock Haven State College, where he played basketball, and received his Master’s Degree from West Virginia University. Larry was a beloved teacher who started his teaching career in Salisbury in 1957, where he also coached baseball and basketball. He then taught Health and Drivers Education at Forbes and North Star High Schools for 34 years. Larry was the co-owner of Barnhart Brothers Auction Service in Stoystown for 17 years. After retirement he started Barnhart’s Driving School for 7 years in Somerset and Cambria Counties. Lifelong member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Stoystown, and a 60 year member of the Stoystown Lions Club, where he was a past president, received the Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award, and the Presidential Appreciation Award. Also a member of Somerset Lodge F.&A.M., Stoystown American Legion, and a proud member of Company C. Frosty Sons of Thunder National Guard. Former member of the Stoystown Lions Antique Tractor Festival, Stoystown Historical Society, and Roof Garden Barbershop Chorus. Larry was a lifelong collector of antiques, clocks, tractors, and small engines with his family and grandchildren. Nothing mattered more in his life than his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was so proud of his grandchildren and followed them in all of their activities and sporting events. Larry “Pap” filled his grandchildren’s childhood with so many precious memories. He loved taking them for ice cream in his Austin Healey, and volunteering at the school with them where he was the best “helper lady.” He cherished the little moments with them just taking evening drives to visit the donkey out the road. He left them with a lifetime of memories, and couldn’t have been more proud of the beautiful family he created. Larry loved Stoystown, his church, and visiting his home in Daytona Beach, FL. He will be terribly missed by his church, friends, neighbors, family, and his treasured dachshund Duke who was “such a boy.” Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown.
