Dale Edward Mort, 75, of Hooversville, passed on April 14, 2020 at his home, four days after his birthday, and one day before his 54th wedding anniversary. Preceded in death by parents; brothers: Francis, William “Bill”, Marlyn, and Kenneth “Kenny”; and sisters: Alma Powers and Rosetta Leach. Dale is survived by his loving wife the former Carole Yule, who cared for him devotedly over the years; daughters: Rita Mort and Hope Barnes; grandsons Blake Barnes and Luke Shankel; sisters-in-law: Evelyn “Ev” Mort and Betty Mort; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends in Pennsylvania and Texas. He was a 1963 graduate of Forbes High School. Upon graduation, Dale moved to Washington, D.C., where he was a milkman. He was later a coal miner in Somerset County, Hooversville Chief of Police, and a grain elevator operator in Houston, TX. Throughout his life, Dale was an avid volunteer, doing everything from serving as a foster parent, to visiting the elderly in nursing homes, to marching in Right to Life rallies. At the time of his death, Dale was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Dale was also a life-long camper, and enjoyed many happy summers at Sunset Valley Campground in Manns Choice. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Hooversville, where he served as an altar boy in his youth. Dale’s patron saint was St. Francis of Assisi, and he loved the quote, “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” Dale was certainly a light in the lives of all who knew him.
