Obituary

Daniel George “Danny” Hay, 71, of Cumberland, MD, died unexpectedly July 27, 2023 at home. Danny was born October 3, 1951 in Meyersdale, son of Robert Earl and Grace Luella (Swearman) Hay. Preceded in death by his parents, and sister Linda who died April 1, 2022. Survived by sister Mary (Don) Stotler of Berlin; brother David (Virginia) Hay of Somerset; two nieces: Jana Lee Stotler and Lindsey Jo (Brian) Cioci; and his two dogs: Mia and Mika. Danny graduated in 1969 from Berlin Brothersvalley High School and in 1971 from Catherman’s Business School, Cumberland, MD. He grew up on the family’s dairy farm in Brothersvalley Township. He was a former clerk at the Cumberland Post Office. Earlier in his career he was employed at City Hall in Cumberland as well as for Cumberland Urban Renewal. Former member of Trinity U.C.C., Berlin, the Milksquirts 4-H club, a participant in the 4-H exchange trip to Utah in 1969, and served as the original Master of the Hillcrest Junior Grange (1963). Member of the Berlin Area Historical Society. He loved his dogs, gardening, planting, and caring for fruit trees on the family farm, attending his high school reunions, as well as keeping abreast of the news by reading the daily newspapers and listening to the news. Danny was a kind-hearted and giving person who was an organ donor. After cremation, the family will hold a memorial service. If friends desire, memorials may be made in Danny’s name to the Berlin Area Historical Society, 400 Vine St., Berlin, PA 15530 or to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, 715 Furnace St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
