Earl Mostoller Obituary

Earl J. Mostoller, 89, Westmont, died May 30, 2024 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born July 23, 1934 in Gray to the late Harry T. and Maggie (Lowry) Mostoller, he was the second of four children. His siblings are: the late Evelyn Naugle, Carolyn Albus and Richard Mostoller. He married the former Sandra Luther on August 25, 1962 and was the proud father of two sons Brad (Mary Stutzman) and Derek (Danielle Weber) and granddaughter Delaney. A graduate of Ferndale High School and Indiana State Teachers College (BS Ed.) and Indiana State College (MEd) He taught Social Studies and English for 37 years at Westmont Hilltop High School. During his tenure, he served as Social Studies Department Chair and advisor to the school newspaper and yearbook. After retirement he continued to operate clocks for Westmont’s football, basketball and track teams as well as several years for Bishop McCort’s and Conemaugh Twp.’s football teams. In addition, he was the official scorer for the Cambria County War Memorial Invitational Basketball Tournament for more than 30 years. He and wife Sandy created and sponsor trophies for the Outstanding Male and Female Track Athletes at Conemaugh Township High School. After retiring from Westmont’s faculty, he served as an Adjunct Social Science Instructor at Mount Aloysius College for an additional 20 years.  This tenure included teaching Economics to inmates at three State Correctional Institutes. He served as a member of the Johnstown Army National Guard unit for 6 years. He was a life member of National Education Association and Pennsylvania State Education Association, as well as a member of Westmont Hilltop Educational Association and a variety of professional committees. He was also an avid student of family history, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, The Sons of Civil War Veterans, and the author of The History of the Adam Barnhart Family. A lifelong member of the United Church of Christ (UCC), church activities occupied much of his time. He was member of St. Paul’s UCC, Johnstown as Treasurer and later St. Paul’s UCC, Stoystown where he served more than 20 years as President of the Consistory. His ancestors were among the founders of the congregation in 1788. Most recently he became a member of Mount Laurel UCC, Gray. He worked in a variety of capacities in The Penn West Conference of the UCC, including terms as Moderator and Secretary of the Board of Directors. He was active in a number of Conference Committees as well as serving as delegate to two General Synod meetings of the United Church of Christ. He was also an associate member of the Windber-Johnstown Hungarian Reformed Church UCC where he was the treasurer and delegate to two Calvin Synods in an unsuccessful attempt to keep the congregation viable. His other activities included reading, running (more than fifty 5 and 10 K runs), hunting (member of NRA), gardening (planting the Mostoller Wild Goose Beans), and trying to learn to speak PA Dutch. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Additional viewing from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Laurel UCC, Gray. Rev. James Stobaugh officiating. Military Honors by the Somerset County Honor Guard will be held at the church. Interment Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stoystown.
