Freda Jane (Rice) Shumaker Ogden

Freda Jane (Rice) Shumaker Ogden, 93, of The Patriot, formerly Garrett Shortcut Road, Berlin, died March 17, 2022 at The Patriot. Born December 14, 1928, in Quemahoning Township, she was a daughter of the late Carl Leonard and Freda Elizabeth (Conner) Rice. She was preceded in death by first husband Robert D. Shumaker, Sr., in 1998, and husband David Leroy Ogden in 2017; her daughter, Amy; sons-in-law Richard Miller and Larry Smith; along with siblings Fay (Lloyd) Woy, Carl, Claude, Tom, Patricia (Lloyd) Young, and Danny. Jane is survived by her children Robert D. Shumaker, Jr., and Joyce A. Smith, both of Garrett Shortcut Road, Berlin, and Scott Shumaker, of San Mateo, Calif.; daughter-in-law Judy Shumaker, son-in-law Brian Cook, and brother-in-law Lloyd Young. Jane had eight grandchildren: Adam (Nicole), Craig (Regine), and Matthew (Aleesa) Smith; Justin (Heather) and Nathan (Angie) Miller; along with Susan (David) Mowry, Jennifer Shumaker (fiancé Steve Sleasman), and Rebecca (David) Boyce. She’s survived by 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and neighbors. Jane was a longstanding member of the Beachdale Church of the Brethren, where she served as deaconess, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the board. She was a 1947 graduate of Somerset Area High School. Her previous employment included Somerset Manufacturing, Riverside Market, and the Somerset State Hospital. Family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Pastor Tammy Horner officiating.
