Joan Zimmerman Obituary

Joan Doris Zimmerman, 93, of Stoystown, died June 4, 2022 at Countryside Personal Care Home in Friedens. Born November 5, 1928 in Moxham, daughter of David M. and R. Fern (Fulton) Barnhart. Preceded in death by parents, husband of 58 years, C. David Zimmerman in 2008; brother David Lynn Barnhart; and life-long best friends, Maxine Ott and Elaine McVicker.  Survived by sons Philip Ryan, married to the former Donna Miller, New Florence; and Joel North, and fiancée Jane Lamp, Friedens; and grandchildren Nevin (Victoria), Nadia Montgomery (Rick), Nicholas (Grace), Hunter and Alexandra Zimmerman; great-granddaughter, Joanna Romayne Zimmerman (named for her great-grandmothers). Also survived by loving, devoted friend, Cindy Bentrim Tomko “the daughter she wished she had”, dear friend Mary Eileen Darr;  sister Norma L. Pile, Denver, CO; brother D. Larry (Marlene) Barnhart, Somerset; sister-in-law Joy Zimmerman, Stoystown; and brother-in-law, Rev. Thomas H. Zimmerman, Friedens. She was a 1946 graduate of Stoystown High School, attended IUP and UPJ, and graduated from McConnell Air Training School in Minneapolis, MN; and upon graduation was hired as a flight attendant for TWA, Transcontinental and Western Air out of Kansas City, MO. Following her return to her beloved Stoystown, she worked in the Post Office for 37 years until her retirement. Lifelong devoted member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Stoystown, where she was active in many duties:  Sunday School Teacher, pianist, Bible School Director, Cradle Roll Chairman, Ladies Guild and Choir member for over 69 years. First president of Stoystown Lioness Club, inspector of elections, census taker for Stoystown and Quemahoning Twp., volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Forbes Area Senior Citizens and Charter Member of Stoyestown Area Historical Society. She was known for her beautiful calligraphy for hundreds of birth announcements, diplomas, wedding invitations, place cards, and family Bibles. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Countryside Personal Care Home for their loving and devoted attention during the last year. Also, Heartland Hospice for their daily kindness since December. No viewing at Joan’s request. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 25th at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Stoystown. Pastor Sharon Fox officiating.
