Joyce Ann (Herdman) Dunn

Joyce Ann Dunn, 84, Berlin, went to meet her Savior on June 14, 2023. Born July 24, 1938 in Altoona, daughter of Edward and Velma (Fink) Herdman. Preceded in death by parents, husband of 62 years Charles, brother James Herdman, brother-in-law and sister-in law James and Barbara Dunn, and dear relatives Kenny Miller and Mandy Henninger. Survived by her sons: James, Richard, and Michael, all of Berlin, and John (Michelle) of Armagh; grandchildren: Kaylin (David), Kassidy (Michael), Christian (Kassandra), and John Michael; great grandson Ridge; beloved cousin Donnis Miller; sister-in-law Sally Herdman; and several nieces and nephews. Joyce graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She earned master’s degree in reading with a reading specialist certificate from Frostburg University. She taught in the Altoona, Chincoteague, and Shanksville-Stonycreek School Districts. Retiring after 36 years in public education, she then taught at the Allegany College of Maryland and supervised student teachers for Drexel University. A member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Berlin, she sang in the choir, volunteered with compassion visitors and the flower committee, participated if Bible study, served on council, and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Pius Spring Woman’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Glade One-Room Schoolhouse volunteer through the Berlin Historical Society, and Hazel’s Red hats. She was honored as the YWCA 2001 Woman of the Year and awarded the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year in 2002. Three of her favorite activities were Bible studies, lunch with friends, and spending time with her family. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Windber Hospice for its compassion and care. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, 525 Main St. Berlin, PA 15530 where service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Robert Keplinger officiating. Interment Berlin I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
