Col. Lawrence R. Smith, USACE (ret.), 92, of Somerset, died November 13, 2022 at The Patriot. Born September 26, 1930 in Meyersdale, son of John Robert and Maude (Mimna) Smith. Preceded in death by parents, first wife the former Susan A. Kuhns, sister Mary Keefer, and brothers: Robert and Jack Smith. Survived by his wife of 26 years the former Linda (Harmon) Swartzwelder; children: Kimberly A. (Steve) Somers, and Jack Michael Smith and wife Linda Hostnick; stepchildren: Pamela Swartzwelder, Robin (Thomas) Chipchosky, and Scott Swartzwelder; grandchildren: Kevin B. Somers, Mark (Kelly) Custer, Jennifer (Josh) Snyder, and Samantha Brogin; great grandchildren: Brooke Somers, Kane Custer, and Colton Snyder; and special friend Eileen Miscovich. He was a graduate of Meyersdale High School, University of Maryland, and Command General Staff School. He was a Korean War and Vietnam War Veteran, who received the Good Conduct Medal, and was a member of the Legion of Merit. Member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glen Savage, Meyersdale V.F.W. and American Legion, and Meyersdale B.P.O.E. #1951. He loved watching westerns, attending antique car shows in his 1967 Ford Mustang, and bird watching. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Kyle Mullins officiating.
