Mary Metzgar Obituary

Mary Catherine Metzgar, 93, Stoystown (Reading Mines) passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at her daughter’s home. Born April 14, 1928 in Somerset, daughter of James Gomer and Louella Rosella (Layton) Steckman. Preceded in death by her parents, husband George Dean Metzgar, son-in-law Terry Sarver; brothers: John Steckman, James “Puggy” Steckman, Howard “Pappy” Steckman and Elmer “Shorty” Steckman, and sisters: Diana Engle, Margaret Kovach, and LaVerne Weyandt. Survived by her children: Terry and wife Sandi, Chuckey, TN, Kim and wife Kathy, Gasport, NY, Kathy Sarver, Friedens, and Marianne and husband, Barry Fisher, Somerset; grandchildren: Michelle (Robert) Bolen, Scott (Sarah) Metzgar, Todd (Jayme) Metzgar, Shawn Sarver, Kimberly (Pete Poodry) Metzgar ,Kristi (Kris) Fry, Jennifer (Mark) Banner, and Jordan (Emily) Metzgar; 15 great grandchildren; and sister Edyth Kimmel. Mary worked for many years as a cook for the Turnpike South Side Howard Johnson restaurant and also for the Dorfman and Hoffman sewing factory. She was a charter member of the Reading Grace Brethren Church in Stoystown. Mary loved bluegrass music and was a regular at all of the local bluegrass festivals for many years. She played the auto harp and also excelled at cross stitching. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy were her favorite game shows and she was always the first in the family to have the answers. Most importantly, she was faithful in her service to her church and in her love of her Savior. A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family with Reverend Larry Weigle officiating. Interment Odd Fellows Cemetery, Stoystown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Reading Grace Brethren Church, 3459 Stoystown Road, Stoystown, PA  15563 or Heartland Hospice, 1590 N. Center Ave, #103, Somerset, PA  15501.
