R. Williams Obituary

R. Donald “Don” Williams, 95, of Berlin, passed quietly to be with God on Friday,  January 17, 2020, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born September 29, 1924 at his family home in Listie, son of William “Willie” Edwin and Alfreda Mae (Snyder) Williams. Preceded in death by parents, wife the former Jean Elizabeth Rose, and sister Dorothy Mae Heiple. He is survived by his children: Tim (Donna) Williams, Judy W Ferver, Christine (Shannon) Wilson, Elizabeth Williams and Gloria (Jim) Bryant; grandchildren: Jim (Kristen), David, Karyn, John, Becky, Matthew (Kristen), Kellie (Bryce), Bethanie (Johnny), and Harley; great grandchildren: Riley, Colin, Brynn, Joshua, Marni, Harper, Henry, and Patrick; and sisters: Ruth Ella Johnson and Zola Baker; brother Bill (Loretta) Williams. Graduate of the Frieden's school in 1942. He was drafted into the US Navy, October 1945, serving aboard the USS Saidor as a Radioman.  He witnessed the atomic bombing at Bikini Atoll and returned to the states as one of the first "Atomic Veterans". He married Jean Elizabeth Rose, of Windber, September 2, 1950. Don worked for PennDOT Somerset as a Maintenance Welder for over 30 years until he retired in 1990, and then pursued his part time hobby of antique cars and part collecting as a full time job. He made many friends from the flea markets and swap meets he went to through the years while traveling all over the US as a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America.  He founded the Sugar Bush Antique Car Club in Somerset. He was an active member of the Berlin Historical Society, and donated many items to its museum. He was a long time member of the Brothersvalley Church of the Brethren. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 11 a.m. until service at 12 noon Tuesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. Pastor Duane Riddle officiating. Military Rites by Berlin Veterans Home. Interment Brotherton Pike Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to, DAV, Camp Parc, or The National Arbor Day Foundation.
