Robert L. Miller, 96, of Somerset, died peacefully on May 1st, 2026, with his son by his side. He leaves a legacy of living life to the fullest along with treasured memories and laughter with family and friends. He was born February 19th, 1930, in Middlecreek Township. Preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Thelma (Pile) Miller, parents Edward and Victoria (Dunmeyer) Miller, sister Bernice Moore and brothers Earl, Dalton, and Wilbur Miller. He is survived by children: Sally (Bruce) Whiteman of Hollywood, MD, Melanie (Bill) McVeagh of Flourtown, Mark (Pam) Miller of Somerset, and Jane Miller of Oakmont; Beloved grandfather to ten grandchildren: Carolyn (Johnny) Cabrera, Katherine, Sasha (Alivia), Igor, Christina (Joel Guenther), Elisa, and Carolina McVeagh, and Kara (Brandon) Crawford, Laura, and Alex Miller; six great grandchildren: Hayden, William, Matthew, Palmer, Calahan, and Roman; sisters in-law Helen “Jean” Hittie and Patricia Gebhart. He was a proud 1947 graduate of Somerset High School, and his early work career began at the Somerset Farm Bureau, where he met Thelma. Afterward, he worked for EXXON, becoming an assistant manager on the PA Turnpike. Bob loved his family and was so proud of all of them; over time, he enjoyed assisting his son and daughter-in-law with the operation of The Pine Grill Restaurant. Church was another big part of Bob’s life at Friedens Lutheran, where he was a member for over 50 years, serving on the church council. He was a member of many organizations including the Somerset Lodge I.O.O.F., Somerset Lodge 358 F. & A.M. and Harrisburg Consistory, EXXON Annuitant Club, and was an original member of the Friedens Chamber of Commerce, attending early morning meetings every week for fun and fellowship. Bob also served as a volunteer with the Friedens Fire Company. He was also a frequent blood donor to the American Red Cross and proudly gave 141 pints of blood over the decades. Bob loved sports of all kinds, as a participant and a fan. He played softball and bowled as a young man. He was an avid golfer for over 50 years, playing at various favorite spots and as a member of leagues. Bob was able to score four holes-in-one over time, and was pleased that a couple of grandchildren have grown to love the sport as well. Bob loved swimming, running, walking, and working out at the Wheeler Fitness Center, where he was a Day 1 member, frequently working out in the early morning hours, fondly remembered as “The Mayor”. Bob never met someone he didn’t know or had a connection with. In his later years, he would serenade family and friends with a Happy Birthday song via phone, and also sent cards for all occasions to many. Bob enjoyed visiting friends in nursing homes, and would regularly call family and friends to “check in” as he felt to have friends you needed to be a friend. Bob was surrounded by a truly wonderful group of caregivers during his past three years, who took exceptional care of him and helped provide him with the full life he loved to live. Family and friends will be received at Friedens Lutheran Church, 131 South Main Street, Friedens, PA on Sunday, 12 noon to 4 p.m., and Monday at 10:00 am followed by a service at 11:00 am, with Rev. John Barichivich, Rev. Edward DeVore, and Deacon Pernelle DeVore officiating. Interment Somerset Co. Memorial Park.
